Curried Popcorn with Peanuts
After a recent trip to the movie theater, I was reminded of the subpar quality of most theater popcorn. They’re usually overly saturated with artificial butter, stale from sitting there for hours, and just generally unsavory.
So disillusioned as I was, I ventured out to create my own at home. There’s something very special about making your own popcorn, and i’m not talking the microwave kind. Popping your own kernels on the stove is probably the easiest way to guarantee the best tasting popcorn, something I tried for the first time tonight! After some inspiration from Rahat Aunty of GEOTV, I decided to currify my popcorn kernels and add some fried peanuts. Here is the quick & easy recipe for desi popcorns:
Add olive oil to a large sized pot and heat under medium heat. Add about a cup of kernels to the oil and cover pot. Wait and watch the kernels pop! Once you don’t hear any more poppin’, remove from heat and set aside. In a separate smaller bowl, mix up your spices! You’ll need:
- 4 tablespoons of earth balance buttery spread
- 2 tsp curry powder
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp pepper
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
Mix up the spices and butter and drizzle ontop of popcorn, as pictured. Next fry up a cup of peanuts in olive oil until they’re toasted and add em to the popcorn. Now toss everything up in the bowl and serve it up! mmmmm kaokaokao.
